cidade da cultura gmc santiago

The City of Culture of Galicia is an architectural complex designed by Peter Eisenman after an international competition in 1999 to which twelve projects were submitted, which is located in Santiago de Compostela and opened in 2011. Erected on the top of Mount Gaiás, the complex is composed of several buildings and spaces oriented to cultural and entertainment matters where the competition meetings will take place, with the perfect space and facilities for all its development and comfort of all participants.

In addition, Eisenman inspired the 141,800m2 that make up the building in one of the symbols of the Camino de Santiago, the scallop shell. In fact, the city simulates the shape of a scallop shell, and even the colors of the shell, as the buildings are coral gray on the outside and white on the inside.

For its development Eisenman used, in general, the morphogenetic theory coming from biology. He considers diagrams as a tool for self-reflection, allowing architecture to reflect on itself, as an instrument of critique. All his diagrams are theoretical and ideological, expressing an ideology.
