ABOUT SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – GALICIA

Welcome to Santiago de Compostela, the capital of the region of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. A city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO thanks to its monumental beauty, its extraordinary preservation and for being the goal of an ancient pilgrimage route: the Way of St. James, which since the ninth century turned this place of finis terrae into a meeting point of faith and thought of the Western world, where the remains of the Apostle St. James are located. These are said to be in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, consecrated in 1211, whose elaborate stone facades open onto large squares within the medieval walls of the ancient city.

 

Santiago de Compostela has an area of 220 Km2 and it is located at an altitude of 260 meters above sea level, near the coast and has a population of 96,405 inhabitants (2018 according to the National Institute of Statistics).
